How Korean name strokes are counted
Hangul is made of an onset (first consonant), a nucleus (vowel), and a coda (final consonant). The stroke count is found by splitting each syllable into these three parts and adding the strokes of the consonants and vowels. For example "김" is onset ㄱ (1 stroke) + nucleus ㅣ (1 stroke) + coda ㅁ (3 strokes) = 5 strokes.
| Consonant | Strokes | Consonant | Strokes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㄱ | 1 | ㄴ | 1 |
| ㄷ | 2 | ㄹ | 3 |
| ㅁ | 3 | ㅂ | 4 |
| ㅅ | 2 | ㅇ | 1 |
| ㅈ | 2 | ㅊ | 3 |
| ㅋ | 2 | ㅌ | 3 |
| ㅍ | 4 | ㅎ | 3 |
| Vowel | Strokes | Vowel | Strokes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㅏ | 2 | ㅓ | 2 |
| ㅗ | 2 | ㅜ | 2 |
| ㅡ | 1 | ㅣ | 1 |
| ㅑ | 3 | ㅕ | 3 |
| ㅐ | 3 | ㅔ | 3 |
Double consonants (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ) write the basic consonant twice, so their strokes are doubled, and complex finals (ㄳ, ㄵ, ㄺ, etc.) add the strokes of each consonant. If you also want your name's English spelling, try the Korean name to English converter.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How is the name stroke count calculated?
Each Hangul syllable is split into onset, nucleus, and coda, the strokes of each consonant and vowel are added to get the syllable's strokes, and all syllables are summed for the full name. For example "김" is ㄱ(1)+ㅣ(1)+ㅁ(3)=5 strokes.
Is reading fortune from a name's stroke count accurate?
Onomancy and naming fortune based on stroke counts are not academically proven. This tool only sums strokes based on Hangul stroke order, so please treat the result as fun and reference only.
How are double consonants and complex finals counted?
Double consonants (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ) write the same consonant twice, so their strokes are doubled. Complex final consonants (ㄳ, ㄵ, ㄺ, etc.) add the strokes of each consonant. Example: "값" is ㄱ(1)+ㅏ(2)+ㅂ(4)+ㅅ(2)=9 strokes.
Does it count strokes for Chinese-character names?
This tool counts strokes only for Hangul (가-힣) syllables and letters. Hanja (Chinese character) stroke counts often used in onomancy differ per character and are not handled here.
